CULTURAL ACTIVITY PLATFORM

A meeting that began with English
English was the first point of connection. Learning and speaking together gave people meeting for the first time a reason to begin a conversation. Local and international young people joined in, while study groups welcomed generations from young adults to older participants. As people shared different perspectives and everyday experiences, a place for language learning became a place to get to know one another.

Shared time beyond conversation
On weekends, both the setting and the activities changed. Sports and parties brought participants from different study groups together in a relaxed setting. The intention was not to organise as many events as possible, but to discover together experiences people might otherwise pass by. Shared interests gave rise to activities, and those activities brought new people into the community.

Experiencing local culture, taking part together
Up to Youth sought to experience the region’s distinctive culture and activities firsthand and introduce them to young people. A drinks-making workshop with Urisul School offered a way to share local culture, while volunteering activities such as coal-briquette delivery brought participants into contact with their neighbours. Beyond enjoying experiences together, the project aimed to get to know the region and take part in its everyday life.

Sharing our activities, welcoming new members
Up to Youth created posters from photographs of its activities, as shown below, to introduce the atmosphere of its gatherings and the range of experiences on offer. With designs and messages tailored to young people, these posters invited participation and helped recruit many new members.

Space begins when people gather
For Archisophia, space is more than a physically defined place: it is where people gather. The region already has many physical spaces, yet without reasons for people to visit and stay, their potential can remain unrealised. Up to Youth, a project carried out by Archisophia, grew from this idea and focused on what people could experience, and whom they could meet, in places that already existed. Through architecture, Archisophia creates settings for people to be together; through Up to Youth, it creates reasons for them to gather. The project sought to offer local young people new experiences close to home and give people from other cities a reason to visit Jeonju. Up to Youth is Archisophia’s cultural project exploring the possibilities of a place through people and activities.
